Open enrolment for the 3rd PhytoSUDOE summer course (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 9 and 10 October 2018)

The third PhytoSUDOE summer course, “New trends in restoration of degraded soils III: trace elements, organic pollutants and constructed wetlands”, will be held in Vitoria-Gasteiz the 9th and 10th of October 2018.

Registration is available through the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) website.

Introduction

The course will focus on the latest trends used for soil decontamination, examples from Europe and Canada. A case of phytoremediation practices (decontamination mediated by plants and soil microorganisms) for trace elements and organic pollutants is shown, including a specific session for the case of lindane. A session on artificial wetlands built to purify contaminated water is also included.

Field visits to contaminated and degraded sites of the Vitoria-Gasteiz surroundings will be done (gravestones of Lasarte, Júndiz industrial estate), where these techniques are being implemented or can be done in the short term.

Objectives

  • Communicate about the importance of the soil and the need for its conservation.
  • Deepen the relationship between soil-plant-microorganisms and their decontaminating potential.
  • Know new in situ decontamination technologies: phytoremediation and constructed wetlands.
  • Learn to apply phytotechnologies to degraded soils and contaminated waters through practical cases, including persistent organic pollutants such as lindane.
