02 Aug Training on Phytotechnologies at the University of Aveiro (phytoremediation and phytomining)
Since geological materials are indispensable to almost all aspects of human activities, it is fundamental to prepare qualified personnel for the characterization, exploration and exploitation of geo-resources. In addition, it is also necessary to take into account the changes in the needs of raw materials for economic development, in particular with the increasing importance of critical metals, as well as the need for exploration activities to be sustainable and environment-friendly. In this context and in alignment with its participation in the PhytoSUDOE project, the Department of Geosciences of the University of Aveiro, has added a module about phytotechnologies to its Master in Georesources.

The phytotechnologies module, lectured by Dr. Luís Novo and Prof. Eduardo da Silva, allows students to understand the concepts and mechanisms behind the main plant-based strategies for the reclamation of metal-polluted soils (with a focus on mining environments), and the prospection and recovery of valuable elements. Taught topics ranged from basic plant metal uptake and hyperaccumulation to the whole spectrum of phytoremediation techniques and phytomining. In addition to the theoretical classes, the module included a field trip to a mine site, in which students collected plant samples to determine their potential for phytoremediation and bioindication. Overall, the module has been a success, receiving very positive feedback from the students.
