Training phytomanagement of contaminated soils at PhytoSUDOE´s S1 site

Taking advantage of the PhytoSUDOE project, Dr Michel Mench (INRA) and Dr Philippe Le Coustumer (UniV; Bordeaux and Uni. Pau et Pays de l’Adour), are currently teaching risk assessment and phytomanagement of contaminated soils at this brownfield site (S1) to Master students of the Bordeaux University.

Students were learning firstly the background on conceptual scheme, site zoning and option appraisal and secondly the pro’s and con’s of phytomanagement based on several ongoing field trials (granted by PhytoSUDOE, Interreg SUDOE-V first call) with soil amendments (e.g. composts, biochars, liming, basic slags, bioaugmentation, and iron grit), sustainable production of biomass for the bioeconomy (i.e. high yielding non-food crops, perennial grasses, short rotation coppices, mixed stand trees, intercropping, plants for essential oils, etc.).

The course focused notably on how to demonstrate the recovery of ecological processes and soil function underlying ecosystem services. Complementary of nature-based solutions with conventional remediation options was emphasized.
